McQueen) to track down a magical moonstone before Katherine and the Original vampires, who aim to destroy Elena to break a curse. Caroline's boyfriend, Matt (Zach Roerig), Elena's aunt, Jenna (Sara Canning), and Jenna's boyfriend, Alaric (Matt Davis), also get caught up in the supernatural skirmish.

If Tyler's Uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney) contributes to the hunk factor, werewolves don't always shake things up as much as intended, especially when Twilight got there first. The adherence to vampire mythology can also be a little lax, since this variant eats and drinks just like the living, which makes their blood lust seem more like caffeine addiction. Further, with so many pivotal relationships carrying over from the first season, the second can feel a little anticlimactic, even with charismatic new vampires, such as Rose (Lauren Cohan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies), though the bond that develops between Bonnie and Jeremy helps to counteract the more gruesome bits of business. And don't get too attached to the principal cast, because one of them won't make it out alive. Extra features offer deleted scenes, a gag reel, and featurettes that explore the wolf transformation process, the split-screen sequences, and the complicated connections between characters.

The third season of Community opens with a musical number promising to be "less weird than the first two years combined"--a promise that, thankfully, goes right out the window as the episode culminates in the eternally glib Jeff (Joel McHale) attacking the study group's table with a fire ax. From there, Community is a freewheeling, ridiculous, and surprisingly complex dissection of sitcoms, friendship, and pop culture in general. The parodies of Law & Order, Glee, and Ken Burns documentaries are only the tip of the iceberg. In the Halloween episode, the characters take turns telling horror stories, each reflecting both pop takes on horror and the character's own psyche. Another episode takes place mostly inside of a video game (with the characters converted into delightful digital avatars), others slip into anime graphics or heist-movie plot mechanics or follow out multiple possible timelines, another mimics Hearts of Darkness, the documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now--this is the stuff of which postmodern doctoral theses and obsessive cult fandom are made. Woven through the season are the efforts of Vice Dean Laybourne (guest star John Goodman, Roseanne) to woo Troy (Donald Glover) into the arms of the Air Conditioning Repair School Annex and the gradual rise of Chang (Ken Jeong) from homelessness to brutal dictatorship, thanks to a hit squad of ruthless 12-year-olds.

Hank Moody lives a life of pure hypocrisy, and the situations in season four continue to bear that out. Facing some serious criminal charges for statutory rape and assault of various kinds, Hank continues to pine for and believe that he's meant to be with Karen (Natascha McElhone, stunning and strong as always). But his babe tally keeps ratcheting up in concert with his pants zippering down. His daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin, another strong, appealing cast member) is the only other thing he loves honestly and completely, yet he embarrasses and burns bridges with her at every turn. With no home and a career that's dependent on the show-biz industry he loathes as much as himself, Hank is truly sinking and doing his best to dig the hole deeper with alcohol, drugs, casual sex, and fisticuffs. Californication is always frank even when it's being funny, which is most of the time. It's pretty much the definition of unrestrained adult entertainment. After one of the many brawls Hank instigates, he explains by way of apology, "I do that, I make people mad." At least he knows who he is. His agent and only friend Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler) has problems of his own--is there a baby in his vasectomied future? He also has some actual work to do now that Hank is in deep with Hollywood big shots. He's adapting his book with the unprintable title that chronicles most of what we've seen in the show so far. This narrative element makes for the entrance of more deliciously bedeviling characters. The always unpredictable Stephen Tobolowsky plays a neurotic producer with aging but raging hormones, and Rob Lowe literally goes nuts with his role as a Brad Pitt-like movie star who is probably certifiably psychotic. Carla Gugino is terrific as Hank's lawyer and possibly the only woman besides Karen who can make him grow up a little. Throughout it all Hank stays a self-hating jerk. But he's a jerk who people are inexorably drawn to in spite of his bald insincerity and unwavering defiance of the rules of society

Through two seasons of Californication, "brilliant train wreck" and blocked author Hank Moody (David Duchovny, a previous Golden Globe winner and nominated again for this season) seemed pretty much unstoppable. But by the end of season 3, Hank might finally have to answer for his sins, and Hank keeps devising novel ways to sin, which makes him as infuriating a protagonist who has ever graced a TV series. "You're such a mess and you cause such chaos," one of his lovers tells him in the wake of an affair that has helped wreck a marriage, "but I wouldn't change anything." Say one thing for Hank's women: they are gracious to a fault. This season adds another tumultuous chapter to Hank's saga. After unwittingly pushing a celebrated writer and college professor off the wagon, Hank assumes his position at the university under--get this--Dean Koons (Peter Gallagher), and, predictably, proves to be an impolitic educator. Early on he discourages one idolizing student with near fatal results. As the season progresses, he will also indulge in extracurricular activities with a student and an emotionally vulnerable TA (Diane Farr). The limbo that is his home life is beginning to impact on his sardonic daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin), paving the way for the return of Karen (Natascha McElhone), who suggests the three return to New York. Meanwhile, Charlie and Marcie Runkle (Evan Handler and Pamela Adlon), now separated, are forced by the slumping housing market to share their house while their divorce is pending. Hilarity and much sex ensue. Making memorable impressions this season are Embeth Davidtz as the Dean's conquestable wife, Kathleen Turner as Charlie's foul-mouthed and sexually aggressive new boss, and Rick Springfield as a deranged incarnation of himself, who gets it on with Runkle's girl. Madeline Zima makes a fateful return as Mia, who stole Hank's book back in season 1. Her plan to tell all could shatter Hank's dysfunctional family for good.

For all its explicit language and graphic sex, Californication is a compelling character study of a seriously flawed man-child. To quote a review of Mia/Hank's book, "It isn't about sex, but loneliness. It's hauntingly hopelessly romantic in the best sense of the word." Big ups!

He’s also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment’s notice to heed his daughter’s call.

Alan Ball's pop supernatural series True Blood expands its scope to an epic scale with its fourth season, which spreads its vast network of characters, human and otherwise, across the map while bringing aboard a host of new personalities, including a magic store owner-cum-white witch (Fiona Shaw) with a dangerous secret. Shaw's transformation from a mousy magic practitioner to vessel for the soul of a long-dead Spanish sorceress is the most intriguing storyline in the fourth season, which also concerns the return of Sookie (Anna Paquin) from the Faerie Kingdom and her subsequent romantic yearnings for Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), which naturally upset her beau and newly minted vampire king of Louisiana, Bill (Stephen Moyer). Though these two arcs alone would be sufficient for most series, season four also manages to fit in a fairly ridiculous bit of business involving Sookie's brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), who becomes a sort of stud for a commune of were-panther women seeking offspring, as well as the fate of Arlene's (Carrie Preston) baby, which begins to share some personality traits with its father, deceased serial killer Rene. It's a lot to pack into just 12 episodes, and as a result, some storylines that deserve to be fleshed out, like the relationship between fledgling vampire Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and human Hoyt (Jim Parrack), are left on the back burner while less effective but flashier ones, like Jason's bout with the were-panthers, are granted a larger spotlight. The result is an uneven season in comparison to its predecessors, but that shouldn't bother die-hard True Blood fans, as the show's steady diet of sex, death, and morbid humor is still operating on full blast.

The Walking Dead follows a band of Atlanta-based survivors of a viral outbreak that has caused the dead to rise up and consume the living. The group's nominal leader is a sheriff's deputy (Andrew Lincoln) who wakes from a gunshot-induced coma to find the world in disarray and his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies, Prison Break) and son missing. His search for his family and the survivors' attempts to make sense of their lives in the wake of the outbreak is handled with intelligence and sensitivity, which helps to elevate the show beyond the grindhouse take on zombies, which favours spilled guts over character development. That's not to say that the blood doesn't flow plentifully here: the special effects are on par with zombie-movie mayhem, but again, they aren't the show's raison d'être. Solid performances, including Jon Bernthal as Lincoln's partner, Jeffrey DeMunn as the group's leading rationalist, and Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus as a pair of trouble-making rednecks, and gripping suspense make each of the first season's six episodes compelling from start to finish for both horror fans and those who dislike the genre as a whole.

After the relatively short first season left viewers salivating for more, season two of The Walking Dead, this time with 13 episodes, was always going to be battling expectation to some degree. It’s a fight it just about wins, though, save for a few bumps around the middle of the season, as the mixture of horror and drama continues to impress. It's a show more than capable of some excellent rug-pulls, too.

The Walking Dead, then, continues to follow a small group of survivors in a zombie-infested world. At first, it’s a slower collection of episodes than we saw with season one this time around. Certainly in episodes around the middle of the season, there's a sense that things are being saved and held back, and that the brakes are being gently applied. But then, season two of the show shoots out of the blocks exceptionally well, and the final run-in, too, is excellent. The strands it leaves in place for season three are particularly salivating, and there's an awful lot to like here.
